These pieces are part of series that combine handmade paper (containing plant parts), honeybee wax, and pigment. Each piece contains an inscribed drawing of a butterfly chrysalis that is native to Tennessee and depends on a specific native plant as it’s host for its survival. Butterflies, such as the monarch, have evolved to lay eggs on specific native plants (like milkweed) for their life cycle. Their caterpillars depend on the nutrients and environment of each’s host plant.
